Mechanical failure

  • Dislocation - The risk of dislocation of the hip has been reported to be one to three percent. However, with the new large ball hip, it has become rare. With a small ball hip, the patient must be taught "hip precautions" so as to avoid this complication.

  • Wearing Out or Failure of the Parts - Although modern total joints are made of super alloys and materials like chrome/cobalt molybdenum, titanium, and ultra high molecular weight polyethylene, human beings may be very active, often taking one to five million steps per year. Failures and wearing out of these parts are becoming more rare, but still may occur.
