The Main Risks of Total Joint Surgery

Surgery

Infection - Surgeons worry more about infection than anything else. Infection is rare, occurring in less than one percent of cases. However, it can ruin a beautifully done total joint arthroplasty, make patients very unhappy, and lead to further surgeries. The risk is reduced by giving antibiotics to patients just prior to surgery and for usually three doses after surgery. "Space suits" are worn which prevent bacteria of the surgeon and operating room personnel from entering the wound. Special antibacterial preparations are used on the patient's skin and special drapes, as well.
