The natural building blocks of our cartilage are materials which are called glycosaminoglycans or GAG's, known as glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate. Many years ago, it was found that thoroughbred racing horses that were given diets supplemented with glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate had less problems with their joints and a lower incidence of lameness.
This material has also been tested in Navy Seals and in other human studies where it was found that it reduced joint pain. It is believed that this material functions not only as an anti-inflammatory medication for arthritis but also by indirect stimulation, results in better production by the patient's own body of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate.
Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are considered condroprotective. This means that one takes this medication on a regular basis in order to help prevent damage to the joints. However, many believe that this material can help to heal damage to the joints and help to prevent worsening of arthritis. Dr. Clyburn performed a study using a rabbit model with a damaged femoral chondyle ( — Read the study). The rabbits that received a diet supplemented with glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate had better healing of cartilage. Dr. Clyburn takes it personally and also recommends it to his patients. He especially recommends it to patients who are involved in high impact or repetitive ladies' sports such as running and also to patients who have arthritic changes.
