The Mako knee is a unicompartmental knee replacement we have been using for the last couple of years. It is FDA appoved, but does not have long term studies to support it. Medium term outcome report and our own experience has been excellent. This technology uses a preoperative CAT Scan to produce a three dimensional image of the knee. This scan is then entered into a computer program which allows us to very specifically plan the surgical procedure including the sizes of the implant and the position of the implants in the knee. In the operating room, navigation is used and a robot with a robotic arm is utilized to guide the surgical procedure such that the preoperative plan is executed precisely. It is a very exacting technique, utilizing computers, navigation and a robot with a price tag of over $200,000.
