This is a development out of Germany in which a metal device is implanted into the bone of a patient who has had an amputation of the leg. A prosthetic limb is then attached directly to this metal rod. This avoids the need for a socket which normally would attach to the patient's "stump" over the skin. The normal socket can be uncomfortable, can cause skin breakdown and can be difficult to walk with. The Endo-exo prosthesis attaches the artificial limb directly to the patient's bone. This seems to result in the patient walking better. Dr. Clyburn has traveled to Germany to train in the technique. The technique is not FDA approved and should be considered experimental.
